We all want to have a pretty smile. This starts with having healthy teeth. Many people watch what they eat and drink because of how it makes their body look; however, you should also be aware because of how these items affect your teeth. Many of our favorite food and drinks can become harmful to our teeth. Being aware of how much you consume these foods and drinks will help prevent problems in the future. While you can sometimes reverse certain damage it is always better and cheaper to work on prevention.

  1. Soda – Besides being high in sugar, soda has phosphoric acid which may contribute to lower levels of calcium in the body.
  2. Fruit juice – The acid in citrus fruits (such as oranges and lemons) can etch enamel. the acid content in these drinks combines with sugars to produce acid that erodes your enamel and breaks down minerals in teeth that cause cavities and decay.
  3. Candy – Sugar-free candy is just as bad for teeth as regular candy because it contains acids that break down tooth enamel which cause decay and cavities to form on the surface of the tooth root. Extremely chewy candy can be bad for your teeth because it tends to get stuck; however, hard candy poses a problem also since it can chip your teeth if bitten into.
  4. Fruit smoothies – The high sugar content in fruit smoothies also contribute to plaque formation and gum disease.
  5. Sports and energy drinks – Not only do these drinks contain sugar, but they also produce acid when combined with sugars that erode tooth enamel and wear away minerals which lead to gum disease.
  6. Coffee and Tea – These beverages create a lot of acids within the mouth leading to tooth erosion (the softening and wearing away of the enamel). Drinking coffee can also stain your teeth if you drink it a lot. To help prevent this you can drink the coffee through a straw.
  7. Alcoholic Beverages – Although alcohol does not contribute to tooth decay directly, it can make you thirsty which leads you to drink other things such as cola, fruit juice, etc.…
  8. Chewing Tobacco – Although not technically a food or drink if you use chewing tobacco or snuff it can cause oral cancer. It can also cause your teeth to rot and fall out.
  9. Mixing soda and alcohol – This is probably one of the worst things you can do to your teeth because it enhances the effects of both beverages, which combined will seriously damage tooth enamel does not mention cause liver disease as well as other problems.
  10. Ice Cubes – Many people enjoy chewing on ice and some even use it as a stress reliever. However, ice can become very dangerous for your teeth because it can wear the tooth down and chip it.
  11. Potato Chips – Starchy foods such as chips are not good for your teeth because they create acid when the starch is broken down. This acid can remain in your mouth hurting your teeth even after you finish the chip.

  • Water – Helps remove debris from your teeth which prevents plaque buildup on your tooth surfaces as well as removes acids produced by bacteria on contact. It helps keep everything clean, rinses away food particles, neutralizes acids in the mouth.
  • Calcium-rich foods – Foods such as yogurt and cheese are good for your teeth as well as your bones because of the amount of calcium they contain which helps to strengthen the teeth.
  • Nuts – Nuts contain calcium which we already discussed as being good, but they also contain phosphorous which is another mineral that is beneficial for your teeth.
  • Leafy Greens – Not only do leafy greens promote overall health by containing healthy minerals they also help your teeth because they tend to cause a lot of chewing which elevates saliva levels to help keep your teeth clean.
  • Strawberries – Believe it or not, strawberries can help whiten the enamel of your teeth. They contain something called malic acid which is a natural teeth whitener.
  • Crunchy Foods – Crunchy food such as apples can be helpful to your teeth because they can help scrape tartar and plaque off your teeth. They can also help to scrape away harmful bacteria at your gumline.

 

Although consuming things in the list of bad foods and drinks won’t automatically rot your teeth, they are things you should limit and be careful with. If you tend to consume them often it is always a good idea to drink plenty of water after and even brush your teeth to prevent too much damage. When in doubt it is best to speak to your local dentist about what you should be consuming for your teeth.
