If the answer is yes, there’s a good chance it will negatively affect your teeth, too. Beverages such as red wine, coffee, tea, cranberry juice, grape juice, and soda are all prime stain-causers.

There are a variety of reasons why these beverages cause more stains than other beverages. Instead, try pairing your favorite tooth-staining foods with tooth-whitening foods. Foods such as cheese, apples, pears, guavas, cauliflower, cucumbers, sesame seeds, salmon, shitake mushrooms, onions, pineapple, ginger, carrots, and basil can all help to protect your mouth in one form or another. Cheese, for example, is high in protein and calcium, which helps to keep your teeth from harm, while sesame seeds help to remove plaque.

After eating a food that is known to cause stains, try rinsing your mouth out with water, if a toothbrush isn’t available. You can also try chewing sugar-free gum to stimulate the production of saliva, which will naturally rinse your teeth. If possible, brush your teeth immediately after eating or drinking.

Good Oral Hygiene

In addition to pairing stain-causing foods with tooth-whitening foods, it’s also important to practice good oral hygiene by avoiding sugary foods, brushing teeth at least three times daily, and flossing on a regular basis. Scheduling regular dentist appointments and teeth-cleanings are also pertinent. If you’re worried about stained teeth, avoid smoking or chewing tobacco, both of which can cause unsightly yellowing of the teeth.

Restoring Whiteness

If you’re concerned about the color of your teeth and are an avid brusher, consider using a tooth-whitening toothpaste, gel, or professional service. You can get your teeth bleached at your dentist’s office, or opt for an over-the-counter option, which is usually less expensive.

Practicing good oral hygiene, regular visits to the dentist, and steering clear of certain foods and beverages are all good preventative practices when it comes keeping your smile bright and stain-free.
