Exposed Tooth Root

If you’ve ever felt that your teeth seem a little longer than they should, or if your gums look like they are being pulled back from the teeth, it could be a dental concern. An exposed tooth root can be a problem to deal with because it can cause sensitivity and sharp pain when eating cold, hot, spicy, sour foods or when brushing your teeth. So what are the causes of receding gums? Why can you see your teeth through the gums? Here is everything you need to know.

What is an Exposed Tooth Root?

Usually, you can only see half of the tooth in your mouth. This is because the rest of the tooth lies behind the gumline and holds the tooth in your jawbone. However, in some cases, the roots of your teeth may become exposed because of specific problems like receding gums. An exposed tooth root is a condition when the roots of your teeth, which are usually below the gumline, become visible or exposed. When exposed to air, this can cause pain and damage.

Symptoms of an Exposed Tooth Root

Several dental problems can cause sensitivity and tooth pain. For example, if your teeth appear to be thinner near your gums, or if you see prong-like projections, it could be a sign of exposed tooth root. However, the visibility of the root depends on which tooth is affected. For example, if the affected tooth is located in the front of the mouth, you may see some of it or more in the following conditions.

  • The damage caused to the gums expose the deep tooth structures.
  • The tooth top has been broken off, so the root is visible .
  • The tooth either loosens, rotates, or falls off.

A person who has an exposed tooth root might also experience the following symptoms.

  • Pain when brushing teeth or swelling
  • Experience the bleeding of the gums
  • Visible changes to the gum teeth or shape
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Longer looking teeth
  • Discoloration of the teeth

  • Aggressive Brushing: Sometimes brushing too hard can also lead to gum recession, exposing the tooth root.
  • Tobacco Use: Using tobacco also increases the risk of gum disease, thereby increasing the risk of the exposed tooth root.
  • Injury: a traumatic tooth injury can also expose the roots of the teeth.
  • Misaligned Teeth: Teeth that are misaligned are more likely to experience gum recession and exposed tooth roots than aligned teeth.

An exposed tooth root can cause pain and sensitivity. There can be several causes like the ones mentioned above. If you notice an exposed tooth root, it’s best to see a dentist as soon as possible to avoid any complications that may then need extensive treatment or tooth removal.
