The biggest reason to me when I think of why do I keep biting my tongue while eating is caused by coordination. There are parts of the brain known as pons responsible for controlling habitual actions such as biting, chewing, swallowing, and more. This is an action that we don’t have to think about. We just do it.

Tongue biting:

Biting your tongue is a habit. A habit that is very common in every other person. A person usually bites his tongue while he is eating something. That distinctive pain becomes surprising and frustrating both for a person who bites his tongue, and of course, nobody likes this pain as it circulates throughout the whole body. I always thought why do I keep biting my tongue while eating, but if it keeps happening with you in a routine, you need to show some concern towards it.

The most common reason for biting your tongue while eating is a lack of coordination. The pons is a part of the brain that controls habitual actions such as biting, chewing, swallowing, and more. It’s a simple action that we don’t have to think about. We do it.

The pons occasionally gets its signals mixed up and misses a step in its otherwise flawless coordination. Nighttime seizures: 

Bite marks are typically found on the tip and sides of the tongue. Seizures at night are a common cause of tongue biting. During a seizure, people with epilepsy lose control of their bodies, and as a result, they may unconsciously bite down on their tongues.  

Obstructive sleep apnea:

Although sleep apnea does not cause tongue biting, it is common in many people with sleep apnea. This is because people with sleep apnea frequently have large tongues. Relaxed muscles and a large tongue can cause tongue biting. Other symptoms of sleep apnea during thinking why do I keep biting my tongue while eating are:

  • A lot of snoring
  • Waking up gasping for air
  • Early-morning headache 
  • Excessive sleepiness during the day

Sleep study 

One way to get to the end of your problem is to ask your doctor to refer you to an expert who can perform a sleep study. This entails staying in a sleep facility for one to two nights. The asleep specialist will use electrodes and monitors to record some of your body functions.

Your doctor may be able to determine what’s causing you to bite your tongue by recording your brainwave activity, eye movement, muscle tone, heart rhythm, and breathing rate. They will then recommend a treatment that is appropriate for you.

Biting tongue treatment

Reduce your stress:

It would help reduce your stress during the day to reduce your risk of tongue biting at night. If you’re not feeling as calm as you’d like, try some relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation, yoga, etc. 

Medications:

Avoid using illegal drugs, such as MDMA, which can increase your risk of bruxism.

There are some issues which are caused due to this issue, and also its cures are discussed.
